idea & initiative inventory
There are lots of organizations and stakeholders in Indinapolis that are working hard on issues that relate to those tackled by the Smart Growth Redevelompent District Partnership. Our job is as much connecting all those dots as it is coming up with new ideas.
As we collect them, we'll be adding these ideas and initiatives to this page. In the meantime, if you know of an initiative out there that is related to our project either by geography (22nd/Monon vicinity) or by topic (sustainability, redevelopment, planning), please let us know.
National Design District Download Fact Sheet
Once home to the largest automobile manufacturing factory in the world (the National Car Company), this development initiative seeks to create a unique live/work district oriented around people and enterprises that design and make things (i.e. furniture makers, landscape architects, artisans).
Anchored by the Design Factory and home to the Indianapolis Project School, the District proposal is for the area from 22nd south to 21st Street and from the Monon Trail east to Dr. Andrew J. Brown Street.
Neighborhood Stabilization Program
King Park Area Development Corporation received an award from the State of Indiana for purchase of vacant and abandoned properties for single-family or townhome redevelopment over the next few years. The efforts will be concentrated along Carrollton Ave, Bellefontaine St, and Cornell Avenue between 19th Street and 21st Street.
Sustainability Demonstration Area
The City of Indianapolis Brownfields Program is pursuing grant funding to repurpose the former "Bulge" railyard along the west side of the Monon just north of 25th Street. A brownfield that was previously proposed to house a First Tee Golf Academy, the demonstration area might include community urban farming plots, a farmers market, composting, low impact stormwater retention demonstrations, and a phytoremediation pilot (natural brownfield remediation). The area might also house a future sustainability education center.
